Why 300 Thread count in 100% TENCEL™ is the smartest choice you can make
By Robert Chan, Co-Founder of KOALA HUG. Robert has more than 20 years of experience in the international textile industry.
Thread count is one of the most misunderstood concepts in the bedding industry. As the co-founder of KOALA HUG and someone who has spent over two decades working in textiles, I’ve seen countless consumers misled by impressively high numbers displayed on packaging and websites.
This guide is here to bring clarity. No industry jargon. No marketing hype. Just the facts—so you can make an informed choice that’s better for your sleep, your health, your skin, and the planet.
Thread count (TC) refers to the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. This includes both the vertical threads (warp) and the horizontal threads (weft). For example, a fabric woven with 150 threads in each direction has a thread count of 300.
The idea behind thread count is simple: the more threads woven into a square inch, the denser and potentially softer the fabric becomes. And while there’s some truth to that, it only applies up to a certain point.
This is one of the questions I hear most often, and the honest answer is: yes—and no.
For single-ply cotton fabrics, increasing the thread count up to around 400TC can indeed create a softer, denser fabric. Beyond that, however, the story changes.
Many manufacturers use what I call “ply inflation.” Multiple ultra-fine yarns are twisted together into a thicker yarn, and each individual strand is counted separately. As a result, a fabric that is effectively 300TC may be marketed as 900TC.
The outcome isn’t a more luxurious sheet. It’s often a heavier, less breathable, and sometimes even stiffer fabric—simply packaged with a bigger number.
When you see thread counts above 400TC, it’s worth looking beyond the number and asking:
A higher thread count alone does not guarantee better bedding.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned throughout my career is that every material should be evaluated differently.
Thread count is only one quality indicator—and often not the most important one.
Material | Key Quality Indicator | Ideal Range | Characteristics |
Cotton Percale | Thread Count | 200–400 TC | Crisp, cool, matte finish |
Cotton Sateen | Thread Count | 300–600 TC | Smooth, subtle sheen, warmer feel |
Linen | Fabric Weight (g/m²) | 170–190 g/m² | Highly breathable, softens over time |
Silk | Momme Weight | 19–25 momme | Luxurious but delicate and expensive |
100% TENCEL™ | Lenzing Certification | 300TC Sateen | Silky-soft, breathable, and exceptionally sustainable |
This realization ultimately inspired me to build KOALA HUG around TENCEL™.
With TENCEL™, fiber quality tells the real story. Thread count plays a supporting role—not the leading one. And at 300TC in a sateen weave, you’ve reached what I consider the sweet spot.
Thread count isn’t the only factor that determines how bedding feels.
The weave itself plays a major role.
Percale Weave
Percale uses a simple one-over, one-under weave structure.
The result is a fabric that feels:
Sateen Weave
Sateen uses a four-over, one-under weave pattern.
This exposes more thread surface on the fabric’s exterior, creating:
For me, 300TC sateen offers the perfect balance: dense enough to feel luxurious and durable, yet open enough to remain breathable and temperature regulating.
This answer surprises many people.
First, it’s important to remember that thread count is always measured per square inch—not per square centimeter. That detail alone explains many confusing differences between brands and countries.
More importantly, a 300TC duvet cover made from 100% TENCEL™ sateen can feel softer than a 600TC cotton duvet cover. Despite the lower number—and because of the fiber itself.
TENCEL™ naturally has an exceptionally smooth fiber structure that delivers remarkable softness without requiring an extremely high thread count.
Combine that with a sateen weave, and you get a fabric that feels luxurious from the very first touch.
For TENCEL™, the ideal range is between 250 and 400TC. Within that range, the fabric maintains the perfect balance of:
Go beyond that, and you often lose those performance benefits without gaining additional comfort.
At KOALA HUG, we combine three elements that are exceptional on their own—and remarkable together:
This isn’t a marketing decision. It’s a textile engineering decision based on what I’ve learned over more than 20 years in the industry.
TENCEL™ is the trademarked lyocell fiber produced by Lenzing AG from eucalyptus wood sourced from responsibly managed forests. Its production uses a closed-loop process that recovers and reuses more than 99% of water and solvents, making it one of the most environmentally responsible fiber production methods available today.
But sustainability is just one part of the story.
Why We Love TENCEL™
For TENCEL™, the ideal thread count range is between 250 and 400.
At 300TC, we’ve intentionally chosen the center of that range.
It is:
A 300TC TENCEL™ duvet cover often feels softer than a 600TC cotton alternative—not because the number is higher, but because the fiber itself does the work.
The sateen weave creates the signature soft sheen and silky hand feel that define premium bedding.
Combined with the naturally smooth TENCEL™ fiber, the result is bedding that feels noticeably different from the very first night.
When evaluating bedding, these are the factors I personally prioritize:
Choose premium fibers such as 100% TENCEL™ or high-quality linen.
Single-ply fabrics are typically stronger, lighter, and more breathable.
Look for:
Not all lyocell is created equal. The TENCEL™ brand guarantees responsible production standards and traceable fiber quality.
Claims of 800TC, 1000TC, or even 1200TC are often the result of multi-ply counting methods rather than genuinely superior fabric.

Thread count refers to the total number of vertical and horizontal threads woven into one square inch of fabric. It indicates weave density but does not determine fiber quality.
No. Beyond approximately 400TC, fiber quality, weave construction, and whether the fabric uses single-ply or multi-ply yarns become far more important than the thread count itself.
For TENCEL™, the ideal range is generally between 250 and 400TC. At 300TC in a sateen weave, softness, breathability, and durability are beautifully balanced.
Sateen uses a four-over, one-under weave for a silky feel and subtle sheen. Percale uses a one-over, one-under weave for a crisp, cool finish. Both can be excellent choices depending on personal preference.
TENCEL™ combines exceptional softness, temperature regulation, moisture management, skin-friendly comfort, and sustainability. It’s produced from responsibly sourced wood pulp using an efficient closed-loop process.
Not all lyocell fibers are the same. The TENCEL™ brand guarantees compliance with Lenzing’s strict environmental and quality standards, including the EU Ecolabel.
